Everyone looks forward to the annual pharmaceutical company league tables from our colleagues at Scrip (also owned by Informa plc). The 2009 tables ranked companies according to their US dollar sales of prescription pharmaceuticals in 2008 to reveal a 12.5% rise in the number of “billionaire” companies. There was little change at the top of the biotech table, with Amgen and Genentech far ahead of all others in terms of product sales. Despite the economic downturn, many companies managed to turn in mostly robust sales performances. Only 11% of the top 100 saw their sales decline (www.scripnews.com).
